Footnote 18, Chapter 4, Page 79:

Inclusion of a variable representing democracy enables some examination of Lijphart’s particular notion of system maintenance. Quantitative analysis including this variable is performed to assess criticisms concerning the relationships between democracy and consociational components. However, this statistical exploration cannot examine democracy as an effect of consociation, and it will indicate the presence of consociation in some undemocratic countries employing some of Lijphart’s consociational components. It will also provide further insights into the relationship between democracy and the other components of Lijphart’s notion of stability, which will be incorporated in the dependent variable.
